Research on the Benefits of Hatha Yoga and Prenatal Yoga
For general well-being
A 2006 comparative trial conducted by researchers from the University of South Australia and the University of Adelaide actually found that their participants reported an improvement in stress, anxiety and health status after just 10 weeks of yoga!
On Women with breast cancer
Research shows that among women with breast cancer, those who did yoga had a steeper daily drop in cortisol levels than women who just stretched. Some studies suggest that if levels of stress hormones remain high throughout the day, a woman's cancer is more likely to worsen.
On women with rheumatoid arthritis
In a study conducted by University of California, women with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) who practised yoga were happier, could generally better accept their pain, had more energy and felt better. Women who did not practise yoga did not experience these improvements.
On patients with atrial fibrillation episodes
Yoga has been found to reduce atrial fibrillation (AF) episodes. A small study has discovered that patients who underwent a three-month yoga intervention phase reported improvements in their AF, where it was reduced. Dr Dhanunjaya Lakkireddy recommends that yoga be used as a supplement therapy for AF.
Yoga may help stroke survivors improve balance
According to new research published in the American Heart Association journal Stroke, group yoga can improve balance in stroke survivors who no longer receive rehabilitative care. Balance problems frequently last long after a person suffers a stroke, and are related to greater disability and a higher risk of falls. Results also showed that for people with chronic stroke, something like yoga in a group environment is cost effective and appears to improve motor function and balance. The researchers concluded that "Yoga may be more therapeutic than traditional exercise because the combination of postures, breathing and meditation may produce different effects than simple exercise."
And especially for pregnant ladies -
During pregnancy, our hormones can cause mood swings. We may also feel depressed, irritable, overwhelmed and unable to cope. Now, new research from University of Michigan shows that yoga can relieve these symptoms and improve bonding with your baby!
