Jala Neti Cleansing technique for the Haze

12/3/2014

Jala Neti is one of a series of ancient body cleansing techniques in hatha yoga called Shatkarma.  Jala Neti is helpful for those dealing with sinus aftereffects of the haze, a cold, or regular allergies.  Its main goal is to clear the main air passageways in the head.

In Jala Neti, a neti pot is filled with lukewarm, isotonic water, and poured into one nostril while tilting your head over a sink.  The water flows through your nasal cavity and leaves through the other nostril.  This flow of water clears out your sinuses completely, leaving you able to breathe easily.  When you have finished one side, tilt your head to the other side and repeat the process.  This can be done as often as needed, and is recommended as a part of your daily cleansing practice.  Be sure to always use sterile water, and clean the Neti pot after each use.  Neti pots can be found online and in health food stores and pharmacies.

Although it produces a strange sensation on the first try, Jala Neti has been deemed a safe and effective way to manage allergies, a cold, or any other nasal afflictions.
